I interviewed numerous Realtors looking for someone who shared my passion for historic preservation, had the business savvy to market my quirky house, and could work with buyers who appreciate and understand historic properties . . . ”

403 Cannon Street Lives Again . .

A journey to perfection as a

project of love with a vision . . .

Located near the center of Town and Fountain Park, 403 Cannon Street began as a fine example of the architecture of the 1870’s. This was a time when ice wagons and milk carriages plied their trade.

At some point, 403 Cannon was divided into apartments without regard to its historic value or architecture. Through this period it was marginally maintained which resulted in obvious structural neglect. It yearned to be returned to its subtle 19th century elegance - a stylish survivor of the Victorian era.

Unfortunately, as a result of the years of being ignored, much of the interior of the house was beyond saving. Fortunately, however, the present owners found the old house and saw its potential to become a fine, contributing property in the Historic District of Chestertown. The owners were also willing to go beyond a simple renovation and add a charming professionally designed private garden, a pool and off-street parking. These were the components necessary for the demands of the 21st century and represented justification for the effort and expense necessary to bring the property back to life. To encourage a new owner to invest in this forgotten building, a new foundation was installed and the interior cleared. Where possible, architectural details were saved. There was still a very long way to go!

One might describe the present owners as courageous and certainly not lacking in vision and determination.

Miles Barnard, of Southfork Studio, was employed to design a peaceful, out-of-the-ordinary garden - rather exotic yet practical to maintain.

The stunning Chanticleer Pear trees lining the property stand as sentinels along the handsome plank privacy fence. The view into the garden from the house reminds one of a private space found in Tuscany.

One enters this outdoor “room” from the off-street parking area off Cannon Street through a private gate via a brick path in basket weave bond. Endless Summer Hydrangeas line the path.

The rear garden is designed as an “outdoor living area and is a day and night extension of the first floor of the house.

The focal point of the garden is the pool with outbuilding beyond. The surrounding beds are planted with perennial vegetation, including ornamental grasses and specimen shrubs.

The combination of these carefully designed features enhance this serene private world.
